Ever feel like people are gatekeeping shizz

by speaking in acronyms that might as well be Ogham* for all the sense they make to you?

Been there. Business speak is a whole new language to learn.

Here’s a fast-track, plain-English breakdown of the most frequent offenders. Thank me later.

Breakdown of common business acronyms

B2B / B2C

Business to Business / Business to Consumer. B2B means you sell to other businesses. B2C means you sell to the public. The way you write, pitch and price depends on which you are.

CTA

Call to Action. The line that tells your reader what to do next. Think “Buy now”, “Book a call”, “Download the guide”.

KPI

Key Performance Indicator. Your measurable goal. Website traffic, conversion rate, email sign-ups. These are classed as KPIs.

ROI

Return on Investment. How much you get back compared to what you spent. Simple maths, often spun into jargon.

USP

Unique Selling Proposition. What makes you different. The reason someone should pick you over a hundred others.

SEO

Search Engine Optimisation. How to show up in search engines. Covers a range of things from industry and brand keywords, through page structure, to backlinks that tell search engines your content’s worth ranking.

PPC

Pay-Per-Click. Advertising where you pay each time someone clicks your ad.

CRM

Customer Relationship Management. A system that stores client details, conversations, and follow-up actions.

OKR

Objectives and Key Results. A goal-setting method used by teams to keep big aims measurable and track progress. If it’s not in the OKR, it’s not a priority.

CTR

Click-Through Rate. How many people clicked your post, ad, or link compared to how many saw it. It’s a way of telling you whether your content actually earns attention.

NPS

Net Promoter Score. A quick way to gauge loyalty. Based on one question: “Would you recommend us?” High NPS = trust. Low NPS = rethink.

That should clear it up a bit.

*Ogham, an early medieval Gaelic/Celtic writing system. A la.

Standing stone with ogham markings.
